Why didn't I think of that!

There are times when you simply can not critique a design. It is so fresh and so new and so compelling that really to start any formal assessment is simply not appropriate.

I was catching up on some TEDs and as usual all were interesting but David Merrill's is just - so cool! I apologise for offering no analysis and to gush but if you think the mouse was good idea for computer interaction then take a look at this.

You can also find this in the TED site here

Lots of designs I see I instantly see where it came from and where it is going. If only I was placed in the same situation I would have come up with a similar solution - I'm sure. OK so this is slightly delusional but engineers tend to think they can fix or create pretty much anything given a suitable opportunity. Then you encounter something which is just fantastic and all you can think is "wow that's fantastic why didn't I think of that!"

Design such as this will develop and change. The siftables may not ultimately be a success that remains to be seen. For now I will choose to marvel at the possibilities the elegance of the design and the paradigm shift that I consider will be the start of something rather special.

David Merrill is a really bright guy....just a PhD student from the Media Lab at MIT founded by Nicholas Negroponte and I think now run by John Maedea
Both major figures in digital design.

Have a look at http://web.media.mit.edu/~dmerrill/ropemaker.html
for a more basic project

Looks like a candidate exercise for M305?
