Linda Haemmerle
Linda came to New Zealand in 1993 with a young family from Germany, where she initially pursued a career in languages. Having grown up in London, with exposure to the arts, living in different cultures and learning different languages, it was a logical step to go to design school once in New Zealand. Linda graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Design, major in Product Design, from UNITEC Institute of Technology in Auckland, New Zealand. She has designed furniture, lighting and consumer products. Her focus has been to design products that are unique and somehow appealing, yet at the same time kind to the environment and user friendly. Briefs have included furniture such as Tre, a multi-functional table with integrated tray and finalist in the interior furniture category of the Home and Entertaining Design Awards 2005, New Zealand. Also lighting and consumer products such as the Bob Pen – ‘Highly Commended’ at the Best Design Awards 2000, New Zealand, which also won a 1st Place award internationally – the IDRA Award, 2001, USA (5th International Design Resource Awards Competition). This product also featured in ‘The Eco-Design Handbook’ by Alastair Fuad-Luke, Thames & Hudson, 2002 and 2004, p.186. She is the founding Director of design company PLUME PRODUCT DESIGN LTD., Auckland. Linda is currently part of the design team for medical equipment for KM Medical: a neonatal resuscitator that supports and monitors breathing in newborn babies at risk. A working prototype was presented and demonstrated for the first time at the MEDICA trade fair in Düsseldorf, Germany, in November 2008. Product development is ongoing and a further refined prototype will be presented at this year’s trade fair: a result of close collaboration within a multi-disciplinary team involving design, engineering and medical experts: a true-life realisation of the motives and ideals of INNOVATIONZ. Linda has been the project manager for INNOVATIONZ since its inception in 2006, and is currently completing a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) at Massey University, Auckland, researching creativity and the different design approaches of industrial designers and engineers.
